The film is framed as the recollections of Sergeant Galoup, a former French legionnaire stationed in Djibouti (he’s played with a mixture of cruel reserve and vigorous physicality from the great Denis Lavant). Loosely determined by Herman Melville’s 1888 novella “Billy Budd,” the film makes brilliant use on the Benjamin Britten opera that was likewise impressed by Melville’s work, as excerpts from Britten’s opus take over a haunting, nightmarish quality as they’re played over the unsparing training exercise routines to which Galoup subjects his regiment: A dry swell of shirtless legionnaires standing during the desert with their arms from the air and their eyes closed as if communing with a higher power, or consistently smashing their bodies against 1 another within a number of violent embraces.
The characters that power so much of what we think of as “the movies” are characters that Choose it. Dramatizing someone who doesn’t Choose It's really a much harder check with, more typically the province in the novel than cinema. But Martin Scorsese was up for that challenge in adapting Edith Wharton’s 1920 novel, which features a character who’s just that: Newland Archer (Daniel Working day-Lewis), one of several young lions of 1870s New York City’s elite, is in love with the Countess Olenska (Michelle Pfeiffer), who’s still married to another guy and finding it hard to extricate herself.

Steeped in ’50s Americana and Cold War fears, Brad Hen’s first (and still greatest) feature is adapted from Ted Hughes’ 1968 fable “The Iron Guy,” about the inter-material friendship between an adventurous boy named Hogarth (Eli Marienthal) and the sentient machine who refuses to serve his violent purpose. Because the small-town boy bonds with his new pal from outer space, he also encounters two male figures embodying antithetical worldviews.

Tailored from Jeffrey Eugenides’s wistful novel and featuring voice-over narration lifted from its pages (browse by Giovanni Ribisi), the film friends into the lives on the Lisbon sisters lobster tube alongside a clique of neighborhood boys. Mesmerized with the willowy young women — particularly Lux (Kirsten Dunst), the household coquette — the young gents study and surveil them with a way of longing that is by turns amorous and meditative.
That’s not to mention that “Fire Walk with Me” is interchangeable with the show. Working over two hours, the movie’s mood is far grimmer, scarier and — within an unsettling way — sexier than Lynch’s foray into broadcast television.
No supernatural being or predator enters a single body of this visually economical affair, but the committed turns of its stars as they descend into insanity, along with the piercing sounds of horrific events that we’re pressured to assume in lieu of seeing them for ourselves, are still more than ample to instill a visceral anxiety.
However, if someone else is responsible for creating “Mima’s xxxbp Room,” how does the site’s website appear to know more about Mima’s thoughts and anxieties than she does herself? Transformatively tailored from a pulpy novel that had much less on its mind, “Perfect Blue” tells a DePalma-like story of violent obsession that soon accelerates into the stuff of the full-on psychic collapse (or two).
